The first Braunvieh imported to Canada from Switzerland arrived in 1968 as a dual purpose breed with the Brown Swiss being bred for dairy. Since that time, there have been several subsequent importations and the result has been the development of Braunvieh in Canada that have been marketed and proven worldwide. The majority of the Braunvieh bloodlines in Canada are pure Braunvieh, as their breeding programs have used imported semen from Switzerland and several imported bulls. |

The movement towards a system where cattle will be sold on carcass merit or a value-based system will allow for premiums to be paid on cutability, muscling and quality grade. Consistent top placement with the most respected carcass/sire evaluation tests in the beef industry have brought much recognition to the Braunvieh breed and its ability to improve beef quality while maintaining production efficiency. | The heaviest population of Braunvieh herds are mainly found in Alberta with some increase in numbers occurring in Ontario. Highly profitable production, long productive lives, quiet, docile temperament, wide range of adaptability, durability unexcelled and rapid growth are all distinctive characteristics of this breed. | |
